U.S. Becomes World Leader In Wind Power
Over the past year wind energy has grown substantially thanks the thousands of individuals and companies that voluntarily purchase renewable energy. The U.S. installed 60% more wind turbines in 2008 compared to 2007. On a typical day Wind energy produces enough electricity to power 6.5 millions U.S. homes! Wind power accounted for 42% of all new installed electric generation capacity in 2008. There is currently a trend of decreased coal power and increased wind energy capacity. For the first time the U.S. overcame all other countries to become the #1 country in terms of cumulative installed wind power capacity. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration renewable resources contributed a record amount in May 2009, making up 13% of all electricity generated. During May 2009 coal generation fell 14.8%.
